Absolute molar mass and structure tools
Determine true molar masses and more with advanced detection
The characterization of modern and highly specialized macromolecules is challenged by the various types of monomers and topologies. The macromolecular architecture strongly affects the application properties according to processing ability, rheological behavior and transport properties. GPC/SEC elucidation of these products has become more feasible with the availability of on-line mass spectrometers and molar mass sensitive detectors like light scattering or viscometer devices. They provide absolute molecular weights, the type of branching architecture and the degree of branching.
Modules Light scattering

The WinGPC light scattering modules support all light scattering detectors regardless of manufacturer and measuring principle. WinGPC UniChrom offers two light scattering modules which differ in the number of supported angles. For applications that can be restricted to a single angle the LS module is the suitable choice, others need the MALLS module that supports multi angle light scattering detectors with up to 18 angles. Both modules support static and dynamic light scattering.

Module Viscometry

The WinGPC Viscosity module supports all on-line viscometers regardless of manufacturer or design principle. Single, dual and four capillary viscometers can be connected either directly or using the sophisticated PSS data acquisition hardware. WinGPC can handle pressure signals (delta pressure and inlet pressure) as well as specific viscosity signals. Any concentration detector (RI, UV, and others) can be used to determine the intrinsic viscosity.
Viscometry Module
Viscosity Module
The viscosity module adds
- specific viscosity and intrinsic viscosity as bulk and slice value
- determination of Mark-Houwink coefficients, Mark-Houwink plot
- universal calibration option for viscometry detection
- molecular weight averages, molecular weight distribution, cumulative distribution
- branching index (contraction factor) g', g' averages
- structural information
Triple Detection
Triple detection
The use of viscometry in conjunction with RALLS (Triple detection) to overcome the limitations posed by 90° light scattering only was the origin of triple detection. Today triple detection systems comprise a concentration detector, a viscosity detector and a light scattering detector independent on the number of angles. This allows for the unambiguous absolute measurement of molar masses, branching, aggregation, agglomeration, structure parameters and gel content.
The combination of the WinGPC Viscosity module and one of the WinGPC light scattering modules adds automatically triple evaluation capability.

Module Mass Spectrometry

The mass spectrometry module supports data import of mass spectrometry data to WinGPC UniChrom. The mass spectrum for every elution volume slice can be reviewed separately. Degree of charge, degree of polymerization and molar mass of the end group are automatically assigend. Band broadening correction is done automatically. A dedicated calibration curve can be created to receive true molar masses for the samples.

Native Data Import
Native data import of mass spectrometry data files from the following software packages is supported
- ChemStation (Agilent Technologies)
- MassHunter (Agilent Technologies)
- Xcalibur (Thermo Fisher Scientific)
- MassLynx (Waters Corporation)
Other data files can be imported using

Operation
Operation
The WinGPC UniChrom Mass Spectrometry module offers a quick and comprehensive solution for GPC-MS data analyis. It is suitable for all types of mass spectrometers (SQ, QQQ, MALDI, Ion Trap,...) and mass spectrometry types.
The concentration detector signals will be aquired by WinGPC directly while the MS is controlled by the MS instrument software, which also records the data. After the MS-GPC experiment a one-time import of the MS data adds all required information to the WinGPC data base.

Module Heparin/End group analysis

The end group analysis software module allows the determination of functionality distribution and absolute molecular weights without the need for calibration standards or light scattering detection. End group data analysis only needs two independent detector signals for the automatic calculation of desired results.
Heparin/End groups
Module Heparin/End Group Analysis
The end group analysis module requires two independent concentration detector signals (e.g. RI and UV) for the automatic calculation of the results.
Additionally this module supports the analysis of low molecular weight heparin products in full compliance with national and international pharmacopoeias (e.g. EP, USP, JP, DAB).
