Viscosity module

Mark-Houwink plot with measured specific and intrinsic viscosity and branching index g'. g' is obtained by comparison with the linear counterpart (blue).

The WinGPC Viscosity module supports all on-line viscometers regardless of manufacturer or design principle. Single, dual, and four capillary viscometers can be connected using the sophisticated PSS data acquisition hardware. WinGPC can handle pressure signals (delta pressure and inlet pressure) as well as specific viscosity signals. Any concentration detector (RI, UV, and others) can be used to determine the intrinsic viscosity.

The viscosity module adds:

  • specific viscosity and intrinsic viscosity as bulk and slice value
  • determination of Mark-Houwink coefficients, Mark-Houwink plot
  • universal calibration option for viscometry detection
  • molecular weight averages, molecular weight distribution, cumulative distribution
  • branching index (contraction factor) g', g' averages
  • structural information

The figure shows the WinGPC viscosity window as a Mark-Houwink plot with slice intrinsic viscosity. The decrease in the intr. viscosity shows the increase of branching with molecular weight.

A comment on triple detection:
The use of viscometry in conjunction with RALLS (Triple detection) has become standard methodology to overcome the limitations posed by 90° light scattering only. The combination of the WinGPC Viscometry module and one of the WinGPC light scattering modules adds automatically triple evaluation capability.
WinGPC UniChrom goes one step further by combining MALLS with viscometry. This allows for the unambiguous absolute measurement of molar masses, branching, aggregation, agglomeration, structure parameters, and gel content.

Light scattering modules

WinGPC Unity MALLS window, for LALLS or RALLS detectors only the left part of the window would be available.

The WinGPC light scattering modules support all light scattering detectors regardless of manufacturer and measuring principle. WinGPC Unity offers two light scattering modules which main difference is the number of supported angles. For applications that can be restricted to a single angle (LALLS, RALLS) the LS module is the suitable choice, others need the MALLS module that supports multi angle light scattering detectors with up to 18 angles.

The LS module adds:

  • absolute molecular weight averages, molecular weight distribution, cumulative distribution based on light scattering data evaluation
  • dn/dc determination or mass recovery determination
  • comparison with conventional calibration results
  • in combination with the viscometry module: triple detection and comparison with universal calibration and triple detection results

The MALLS module additionally adds:

  • Rg, molecular size
  • evaluation options: Zimm, Debye, Berry
  • branching information g, g averages
  • structural information

The figures shows the WinGPC MALLS window with Zimm data evaluation for molecular weight and the radius of gyration determination. Here a seven angles light scattering detector has been used resulting in seven simultaneosly measured scattering intensities for the Zimm plot. Data: SECcurity SLD7000

Heparin/End group analysis module

WinGPC Elugram window with RI and UV detector signal and overlaid calibration curve.

The end group analysis module allows to determine functionality distribution and even molecular weight without the need for calibration standards or light scattering detection.

The end group analysis module requires two independent concentration detector signals (e.g. RI and UV) for the automatic calculation of the results.

Additionally this module supports the analysis of heparin products in full compliance with national and international pharmacopoeias (e.g. EP, USP, JP, DAB). The figure shows the RI and UV 234 nm signal for the CRS low molecular weight heparin standard and the resulting automatically determined calibration curve. This calibration curve is used to measure the absolute molar masses of low molecular weight heparins as well as the mass percentage lower than 8 000 Da.

Other heparin analysis methods (e.g. using broad standards for calibration) are already part of WinGPC UniChrom and do not require this module.

Copolymer module

Copolymers have a chemical composition distribution (CCD) and a molar mass distribution (MMD) and are therefore complex polymers. The copolymer module allows comonomer distribution analysis with WinGPC Unity.

It adds

  • average chemical composition analysis
  • comonomer distribution
  • copolymer molecular weight averages and distribution

This method needs two independent concentration detector signals for the automatic calculation of the composition and is based on the multiple detection approach of copolymer calibration. This method requires molar mass calibration and an additional detector response calibration. Other kind of information, parameters or special equipment is not necessary.

Chemical heterogeneity module

WinGPC Unity Chemical Heterogeneity Result window

The chemical heterogeneity module allows the analysis of chemically heterogeneous polymers (e.g. copolymers, endgroup functionalized polymers) in the interaction mode of chromatography (HPLC). This method requires a calibration of (HPLC) retention with standards of known chemical composition. The chemical heterogeneity module is an alternative for the copolymer module which calculates composition based on the detector response.

The module adds

  • the average chemical composition G,
  • the skew, S, and the width, dG, of the compositional distribution

The figure shows the results for a PS-PMMA copolymer analyzed with the chemical heterogeneity module. The x-axis shows the PS content, the grey result window the numerical results.

2D Chromatography module

WinGPC UniChrom 2D module combining HPLC and GPC/SEC.

The 2D Chromatography module is the module of choice for copolymers with a large number of hetero-contacts, e.g. statistical copolymers, polymers with only short comonomer sequences and high side chain densities.

It combines the separation power of two different chromatographic methods (dimensions). This results in a dramatical enhancement of resolution and peak capacity as well as in-depth information on complex products. All kinds of detectors can be used in both dimensions.

WinGPC with 2D chromatography supports any separation technique for the first and the second dimension:

  • HPLC
  • GPC/SEC
  • TREF
  • IC
  • CE
  • GC
  • and others.

An automated transfer valve, controlled by WinGPC and operated with a convient software wizard, transfers sample slices from the first into the second dimension. The 2D chromatography module creates 3D surface plots and contour maps from the data. Evaluation, e.g. determination of molar mass or chemical distribution, is achieved by calibration of both axes.

The WinGPC modules Copolymer and Chemical Heterogeneity are useful additions to the 2D module, to have all calibration options available.

The figure shows a 2D contour plot for a copolymer with calibrated x-Axis (GPC/SEC) for molar mass determination. The contour plot shows the increased peak capacity of 2D Chromatography.

3D Spectra module

The module of choice for comprehensive analysis and presentation of 3D-DAD/FLD data fields.

The module adds simultaneous data acquisition of 2D and 3D signal sources (eg, RI, MALLS, DAD, FLD) with simultaneous recording and evaluation of multiple systems. After analysis a  full UV / VIS spectrum or FLD spectum is presented with  automatic assignment and interpolation of 3D data fields.

Individual reports for chromatogram/elugram, molecular weight distribution, 3D graphics with selectable observation point, elution volume, concentration, 2 - and 3-dimensional contour plots (line and surface plots) are available.

A comparison of 3D-DAD data fields is available by the overlay of raw DAD spectra.
